STEPHEN WALTER

About

Born (1975) in London, Stephen Walter is of English and German heritage. Currently lives and works in London.

My artistic practice is predominantly drawing-based, extending into painting, photography, collage / montage, animation, sculptural forms, digital applications and various printmaking processes.

The work centres on a fascination with mapping and the concept of place. Obsessive drawing techniques often make each work an intricate and layered world in itself, an inter-play between the micro and the macrocosm.

This includes the recording and re-mapping of known places through extensive research. The maps put special emphasis on geography, history, philosophy, politics and semiotics. These landscapes full of signs and symbols are a visual representation of our language and they also allude to wider patterns and new conceptual forces at play in the world today. They depict environments that are inhabited by both natural and human cultures - physical infrastructure, ideas and cultural residues occupy certain locations; and are seen through the prism of inheritance and collective understandings. The maps also question the ever-evolving meaning of landmarks and how and where these ideas converge with the complicated notion of place. Place as a substrate from which ideas, notions and things form themselves and are then in-turn taken over by incumbent and newer incoming forces. These landmarks come to symbolise the institutions of our day.

Other works are built up from smaller elements towards the infinite with a growing emphasis on Cosmology and Metaphysics. Observational studies into biomorphic forms allude to the infinitesimal nature of things and the psychological phenomenon of Pareidolia - the perceiving of a familiar pattern where none exists. My works revel in the bridging of these gaps; the limits to which we can read and understand such things and the entropy that results from trying.

I have recently animated a series of woodland images that hover in a time-scale between total black and total white out. The levels of detail are maintained throughout the films giving them an eerie effect of night and day sequences. They elude to a sense of time and the ephemeral nature of appearances as the depicted matter slowly dissolve and re-emerge. Also going on to reassess the ever-evolving concepts about landmarks (both physical and cultural) with sculptural forms such as the Hagioscope Frame, a digital application with Cogapp - Walterian London, and more recently back into the processes of collage.
